SCAR-KGIS (Geographic Information System on King George Island)

Colonel Norbertino Suárez, Servicio Geográfico Militar

The King George Island Geographic Information System Project (KGIS), within the framework of the activities of the Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR), has as main objective to maintain and update a cartographic base and geospatial information concerning King George Island.

The Military Geographic Service (SGM) has carried out different surveys and cartographic work on some areas of King George Island, particularly the area occupied by the BCAA and its surroundings. On the other hand, it has carried out topographical surveys in the Minor Dome of the Collins Glacier and nearby areas, which allowed to produce cartography of the Fildes Peninsula and other areas of King George Island.

The future projection of the Project, particularly the SGM, includes the updating and production of cartography at the request of the Uruguayan Antarctic Institute (IAU) and related projects; and the implementation of a Geographic Information System for the registration and representation of Protected Areas, as well as the spatialisation of different activities of the research projects carried out by our national technicians and scientists in the framework of the biennial call for IAU Projects.
