Bioprospecting of cellulolytic yeasts – potential use in the production of bietanol

Dr. Susana Castro-Sowinski, Facultad de Ciencias

The group is dedicated to the isolation and identification of microorganisms with potential biotechnological uses. We have generated a collection of protease-producing bacteria and yeasts (for the detergent industry); Cellulases, amylases and pectinases (for the degradation of plant material and subsequent alcoholic fermentation by yeasts); And photoliases (repair of DNA damage caused by UV irradiation, for cosmetics and pharmaceuticals). In addition, the group is analyzing the potential of pigments produced by Antarctic microorganisms as chemotherapeutics.
